The whole thing is a bit of a farce anyway. I think they are guilty but how it has got to court and been so widespread is beyond me.
They are both very very rich men in their own right and we are talking about relative brass buttons for the tax they have allegedly tried to avoid. There must be another agenda here, god knows what but this case should have been either thrown out or settled out of court AGES ago.
To put it into context - We have a client that for whatever reason was accused of tax evasion. HMRC wanted him to cough up in excess of £100k, in the end they settled for £50k and a warning that they will be keeping tabs on him / her. That was a massive hit to the bloke in question. Redknapp earns and pays tax of more than 10 times this chap / chap'ess.
This sort of thing happens all the time and while it doesnt make Redknapp / Mandaric right, it makes it common and the whole thing has been blown well out of proportion.

Like you say Sal this is common. How this wasn't settled before this got to court i'll never know. The amount is relatively low to NOT seek a settlement, far bigger tax cases than this have never seen the inside of a court. Roughly £10,000 a day (approx) cost to the public purse for a trial at a crown court in London, doesn't really add up when compared to the amount of lost tax.

Perhaps they were perceiving it to be a warning to other sportsmen who are doing the same?

If thats the cost to the tax payer then its a fucking disgrace that it has went this far.
There HAS to be another agenda, maybe he upset someone high up in the police or whatever the last time he was investigated.

Bit of a dear warning, which they lost anyway. They must have known they would lose just as 'Arry must have known he would win - Otherwise he would have tried to settle early.
Something doesnt seem right but we will never know, we will just foot the bill and get on with it as normal.

Aye the Revenue are surprisingly quite willing to accept significantly lower offers, even agree to just write-off penalties/interest at times.
It does seem a lot of fuss over such "small" amounts, as you say Sal, there must be another agenda.

Makes me sick, I Dunno how much Redknapp owed, out why it wasn'nt pa, but 8 million quid, for a 5 year investigation into it is a joke, and for them to walk away with a not guilty is embarrassing, and a massive waste of I'm assuming tax payers money.
