And a mountain of unsustainable debt, Ruud Gullit, Graeme Souness, Kenny Dalglish...part of the reason why we are where we are.

Tbf Steve, Dalglish (back then) is the sort of manager people are asking for now.

A proven Premier League manager.

He won the thing, so he had to be seen as a class manager and a good appointment back then?

Hmmmm well I did not know that.

Could say that all top managers "buy" the title cause only the clubs with money ever have a chance of winning it.

hind sight is a wonderfull thing.........not many people were complaining when Dalgleish came here.......he had a proven track record and could attract decent players........same again with Gullit, he'd won things and played attractive football.....1000's turned out to welcome him when he came

Souness was a total fuck up but if Bellers hadn't been an utter cock, things might have been slightly different on that score

as for the unsustainable debt?.....fuck it

Only if they chuck the stuffed magpies out - the cabinet isn't that big.

Probably not. Spending daft amounts of cash won't necessarily win us anything.

Souness goaded him into it. The day he walked into the job he'd clearly been given the brief to set down a hardline and that he should start with Bellamy.

Yes Bellamy was a fool for falling for it, but when Souness started taking swipes at him in training then asking him for a fight, for once you can applaud Bellamy for keeping his head for so long.

If it was me I'd have chinned the dopey jock fuckhead the moment he stepped on the training ground.

I was almost in tears the day Souness was appointed.

I could not believe what a backward step appointing him was after having Robson.

Shepherd got one thing right and that was having SBR beg for the job. Everthing else he did was shit. He was like Midas in reverse. To take a club from top 2 to bottom half with a mountain of unsustainable debt like he did took some doing.

Oh bollocks to it. I'm boiling my cabbages twice again. Shut up mac you tart!Big Grin

Some good points made about Dalglish mind. At the time I was relatively happy with him coming, thinking he would add a winning mentality to an almost perfect team - just goes to show.

For all my pontificating about getting a better man than Hughton in in the summer, he could actually prove to be the best thing that happened to the club. Just look at Moyes, or indeed KK first time around.

Last season shouldn't count really, I'm beginning to come round to the fact that Hughton may be just what we need in our first season back.

Oh dear - the kiss of death. Big Grin

i disagree

Portsmouth had a far worse disease than Shepherd, Storrie and Arry were far more corrupt than anything Shepherd did

And dont forget most of our debt was secured and only became repayable in full when SJH fled, with his bundles of dosh

Portsmouth have a third of our support at games, and werent filling that awful ground when we could fill ours easily

Our turnover far exceeds any debt the club could get into now
