pretty much a season of two halves

Feels good to be safe with five games remaining, it's mission accomplished for Benitez two seasons running despite no help from the fatfuck, and whatever the clown decides to do in the summer and it leads to Benitez leaving he can walk away with his head held high and his reputation intact, dont be fooled by the calm, unruffled exterior in his post-match interview, he will have been full of pride of what he has achieved and soon as he got back to his hotel room would have had a bit celebratory gangnam style in front of the mirror in his underpants.

Everything that was wrong about both the team performances and certain individual player performances in the first half of the season seem to have become less problematic in the second, namely Perez doing fuck all, Diame being shite, Shelvey dropping everyone in the shit with his inconsistency and suspensions, Atsu being wasteful and frustrating, Joselu being a waste of time space and money and two very dodgy keepers.

Add to that Benitez boring over-cautious approach to most games and it was a recipe for disaster, although at the end of december he did put a positive spin on it reiterating that with 19pts we were only 1pt off our target for the first half of the season, but he must have known that there were big changes needed from january onwards if we were gonna avoid another relegation battle.

The win at Stoke on new years day was such a welcome result, kicking off the year with a positive three points and the last ten minutes of that match we started to see the passion and the spirit of the defending as stoke threw everything at us, Lascelles was immense in that match blocking everything and leading by example. IIth February beating Man utd has proven to be the turning point, considering we have only been beaten one since then. I felt that evrything Benitez had been trying to get through their thick skulls finally clicked in that match, every player at last putting a full shift in for 90 minutes.

Hopefully the next season Benitez is given the backing he deserves, as i said being safe feels good and four straight victories is fantastic, but the passing at times does leave a lot to be desired, we still struggle to keep hold of the ball for very long which is reflected in the fact that out of the 12 league games this year we have only had more possession than the opposition in two of them, those being the Burnley and 'uddersfield home games. Definitely food for thought.

assuming we purchase the 3 loan players in the Summer it'll cost something like 35- 40 million just to stand still

Dubravka will stay cause he's cheap.

Kenedy and Slimani, probably not. Kenedy will go somewhere else, someone willing to pay Chelsea's fee. Slimani will be difficult 'cause Leicester paid around £30m for him and we'll want him a lot cheaper. Not sure there'll be an agreement there.

Unless this takeover happens, then who knows...

'kinnel, that was the shortened version there was almost twice as much but towards the end firefox crashed so i had to start again, but the crux of it is quite poor and worrying first half of the season and a quite remarkable second half, Benitez has done everything he was asked to do, firstly get us straight back up, secondly keep us up.........now what?

Another contributing factor is he reduced the fannying on with squad rotation.....he would change a winning side for no apparent reason early doors but we've been playing much more settled sides recently

Notice how few injuries we get now with Rafa.

I think when you have a manager you trust, all those 'sore legs' and 'feeling his hamstring' disappear because you want to be involved.

Obviously there's the usual rotation from Rafa but a lot of the changes early on were forced through injuries (or suspensions in Jonjo's case) and the slight changes to the tactics that come as a result of that.
