Rafa states what is needed to keep him as manager

Rafa Benitez has made it clear that he isn't interested in fighting any more relegation battles at Newcastle United.

The Toon manager hopes to transform Newcastle into a "top eight" team and wants financial backing from owner Mike Ashley to support his vision, Chronicle Live reports .

Former Liverpool boss Benitez moved to St James' Park in 2016, but couldn't prevent their relegation from the Premier League.

But he was convinced to stay on and oversaw their immediate return to the top division.

Speaking about his future to Marca, Benitez said: "The owner (Mike Ashley) knows it: me and my team are looking for a future project, competitive and ambitious.

"Let's see if we are in the same line.

"I stayed in Newcastle and it was a high risk. We could not save them the first year, we missed a couple of games, but the next we went up.

"It is a top club and to stay was a sign that we are professional coaches. We are in it to win titles."

The Spaniard's contract with Newcastle expires in June, and it has been speculated that frustration with Ashley's lack of investment in players could see him walk away for another club.

But the Toon finally broke their 14-year-old transfer record in January to bring in Paraguayan playmaker Miguel Almiron for £21million.

Benitez said: "The idea was to invest to enter the top 10, but the money did not reach the expected level.

"Now we are once again solving a problem of that lack of investment.

"Each owner manages his club as he wants.

"Newcastle has everything to be there, in the top eight, but it is not happening.

"I hope it is done in the future."

7th is achievable, even with Ashley.

What pisses me off is when we have invested it's been the wrong manager.

Steve McClaren must have had a tongue like a hooker.

Give Benitez McClarens money and we'll piss top eight.

forget it....the only future project will be like the past projects, ie. the target is 17th place, and cups will never be a priority because they could hamper our chances of reaching that target.

You don't spend £90mil net within 12 months to finish 17th and this was before the big money tv deal.

Is he all that, though..??

The only reason Longstaff is playing, is we have had injuries to many of our midfielders, which is fucking worrying, surely Rafa must have seen on the training field he was a footballer with a footballers brain, head and shoulder above some of the regulars he has been fucking picking..

Time will tell let’s just see how we do this season first. We are capable of being a top 8 team without much more investment the standard of football displayed by most bar the top 6 is average most of the time. If we did invest wisely we could even challenge top 6 but that is a long way off at this moment in time.

17th has ALWAYS been the target for mike ashley.....in fact twice because his penny-pinching plan of hiring shite managers has back-fired we have ended up below 17th.......but now that we have a manager capable of taking us to the top eight and then beyond.....mike ashleys target is STILL 17th . Rolleyes

I get what your saying mate but transferring from training to the playing field is maybe a gamble Rafa didn’t want to take but he had no choice in the end.

That's where managers earn their corn though, making decisions like that, i agree with jinky that he should have seen that the way he was performing in training was premier league standard, if he's good enough he's old enough as they say.

It happened with KI as well in the Watford game - only came on when Shelvey went off injured

we looked a totally different team and KI set up Perez for the first win of the season (in Nofuckinvember) - Perez was also a substitute in that game

3 forced substitutions and we looked a better side instantly

Ki is ten times the player Shelvey is.

I've never been convinced with Shelvey. I remember watching an interview with Shelvey whilst he was at Swansea and he was on about how he'd hired a personal chef just to cook him chicken an broccoli. What kind of knob can't cook that for themselves?

Despite being fucked about by Ashley, Rafa has quietly build a pretty decent squad, his centre back signings in particular have been excellent.

Agreed. We have a very impressive depth to our centre backs. Just a shame our full backs are shite.

Hmmmm - Do you not think Ritchie has proven to be built for that left wing back role? I think he has given an option to prolong his stay at NUFC assuming we do make some progress up the league.

I think he is limited as an out and out wide player, but filling the wing back role it seems madness to take him out of there at all.

I also think Dummett is a really solid left back and would have a squad place at the very least in many PL clubs.

I like Yeddlin, but I agree he can be upgraded or at the very least have some pressure applied by bringing in viable competition.

If we were to sign Rondon, I honestly think we are just a couple more clever additions away from being the best of the rest so to say. From there, anything can happen if we were to be taken over.

I've got to be honest - I would like to see someone better than Rondon signed

Don't we all, but we should be signing him and at least one hopefully better striker.

But Ashley.

I think Rondon is an excellent centre forward and we would struggle to find a better fit as things stand.

He gets better every time I see him play.

Yes he isnt what folk would regard as world class, but we arent anywhere close to signing world class players.

I fuckin love Rondon, me.

Strong, quick, agile, he holds up the ball very well, can shoot with either foot and has a monster of a header on him. What's not to like ?

Aye Ritchie has done well but it's one of those where he's been forced into the role instead of being natural. I've never been massively convinced with Ritchie. Works his bollocks off but I'm not sure what he's actually good at. Dummett has always looked better at centre half but that's where we're strongest so he's an obvious candidate for an upgrade. I'm not sure Yedlin has a football brain though granted he's lightening quick so id keep him just for that. The less said about Manquillo the better I think.

A couple of injuries especially to the likes of Rondon and we will be back to struggling. We are still lacking any decent back up for him.
