Former Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has defended owner Mike Ashley and has warned United could be a lot worse off without him.

Ashley is into his 12th season as Magpies owner and has been at the helm for two relegations from the Premier League during that time.

Newcastle have made a net profit in transfers this season and Rafa Benitez had complained about recruitment in the summer transfer window.

It is said to be a sticking point in negotiations over a new contract, with the Spaniard's current deal at St James' Park set to expire at the end of the season.

Benitez wants to stay but if he doesn't it will likely lead to protests from fans who are sick and tired of the Ashley era.

Ashley has officially put the club up for sale twice and in the last two seasons he has publicly aired his hope to sell the club on.

t never happened and while he remains, the frustration does as well, with Newcastle, on the pitch, not far away from having a very decent squad.

Roeder played for Newcastle between 1983 and 1989 and managed Newcastle between 2006 and 2007.

As manager, he guided the Magpies into the UEFA Cup before he was replaced by Sam Allardyce and he was a guest on TalkSPORT on Wednesday afternoon.

He defended Ashley's ownership of the club and warned new owners could be worse than the Sports Direct magnate.

When presenter Jim White put to Roeder that Newcastle fans would never accept Mike Ashley, Roeder replied: "99.9 per cent of Newcastle United fans will never be Mike Ashley the businessman.

"Whatever you think of him as a football man he has got to be a very intelligent businessman to do what he has done in business.

"I'm not necessarily saying they should embrace him but I can think of a lot worse owners than Mike Ashley owning your football club.

"Take, for instance, Alan Pardew. He could have sacked Alan Pardew three or four times during that really rocky period but he stuck by him.

"In the end, when Alan had an opportunity to slip out of there he didn't wait for another bad spell where Mike might lose patience and sack him, he joined another club.

"They might be worse under a new owner. If he sells the club at the price he wants, I am just hoping the new owner has very deep pockets to improve the squad because it does need badly improving.

"They played well last night and they deserved to win against an unusually limp Burnley team.

"Over the past 10 or 15 years the recruitment has been terrible. It is not all about money. Some of the players that have come in haven't deserved to wear that black and white shirt."

Roeder defends Ashley

He doesn't have to put up with the same old shit that he spouts every year. It would be nice for us to have a change surely even a stubborn clown like Ashley can see this. Having said this he doesn't give a toss about the supporters as long as he rakes the money in from his investment. He is quite an unpleasant person but a very rich person on the back of this so again I don't think he gives a flying fuck about the likes of you and myself.

Why not maybe because I like watching live football and don't get to see the team I support very often. Just because he is in charge does not mean that I support the team on the pitch any less even if they are not the best NUFC team I have ever seen. Having said this I have seen a lot worse in all my years as a Newcastle supporter and I have certainly seen better. As a supporter you need to take the rough with the smooth. I wish we had a different owner but unfortunately what we wish for and what we get doesn't always happen so why would I penalise myself by not going to games. You choose the other option that is your choice it is not mine. How he feels about me is irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

I wish they'd just keep their gobs shut. I had a lot of time for both Roeder the player and the manager/coach but I have lost a bit of respect for him. I mean all he's saying is "it could be worse" and at least he's not saying we should be grateful but he'd have been better off saying nothing at all.
