Former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson has joined the board of Newcastle Elite Academy.

Williamson joins current United players Matt Ritchie , Dwight Gayle, Paul Dummett and Rob Elliot on board the project and admits one of the aims is to work with youngsters who may have slipped the net for the region's three big clubs.

The former United man will help run a full-time BTEC programme and look to develop young players who are potentially looking for a second chance.

After joining the Elite Academy, Williamson told the Chronicle: "My links to the city and the club are there and I've kept in touch with Rob Elliot who set up the Academy here.

"I was actually looking to do something similar down south if I got the opportunity.

"But as a family we made the decision to come back to Newcastle.

"Rob presented the chance and it was a no-brainer for me as it was in line with my beliefs and passion.

"Moving forward to have the opportunity to have an effect on young guys in the game at an Academy, not many can offer that."

Williamson brings with him a vast knowledge of the game from England's main five divisions.

The Gateshead centre-back said: "It is about development.

"I have played from National League level up to the Premier League, in every division.

"And the understanding that I have gained and experience being around I get how people will develop at different rates.

"It is fascinating really. Not only do I want to help it is something I am obsessed about.

"I want to make a different in every area I can.

"The lads who are involved have played at many different clubs at different levels and can bring all of that knowledge together.

"We can create an environment for the lads that is unparalleled."

But Williamson is now looking to take advantage of the catchment area on Tyneside.

He said: "It's a great catchment area and city for sport in general.

"Obviously, football is the biggest sport.

"Thousands of people will be developing at different rates that may not get taken on.

"They need that bit of extra time and development.

"If they get that coaching it creates belief in themselves and they can go on to different levels."

Elite Academy's Louis Storey also spoke about the signing of Williamson, and said: "Mike will be coming on board as a director, adding to existing team of directors with Rob Elliot, Paul Dummett, Matt Ritchie and Dwight Gayle. His role will entail overseeing the whole academy and the various performance and participation programmes we run especially our BTEC programme as well as future growth of the academy in the years to come.

"His vast experience of being a professional football player as well as his most recent role as player - coach at Gateshead and his passion to be able to help nurture and develop the next generation, providing the best opportunities for our student athletes means he’s a great addition to our academy.

"Mike will support the coaching team on and off the pitch as well as supporting our group of student athletes throughout the season to reach their full potential. We are still recruiting talented Under 16’s to be apart of our unique Full-time Football education programme for September 2019."

He wasn't a very good player (to be kind) but as we know there isn't a correlation between being a good player then becoming a manager/coach.

He seemed like a decent enough chap who tried his best for the club, not his fault he was playing out of his depth.
