Toon in hunt for Slovakian starlet

Newcastle United have stepped up their pursuit of highly rated Slovakian star Lubomir Lorijkov after inviting the defender to a trial at St James' Park. The 16-year-old MFK Kosice defender is being tracked by a raft of top European teams and he will travel to Tyneside so Newcastle can take a closer look.

The Magpies could lose a string of key players if they fail to beat the drop this season and they reckon Lorijkov is a ready-made replacement.

"Korijkov is an outstanding defender," said Allen Bula, Kosice's development coach.

"Kosice have been approached by a number of top European clubs about him."

16!!!!! bloody hell man he won't be near the first team for at least 3 years. When are they going to realise this strategy will only work if they invest in the current first team also.

Anyhow, you rarely get more than 2 young players coming through at the same time, so it will take 4 years to get 8 players through by which time the first two will have fucked off. You still need to buy quality players to 'top up' the first team squad.

Im all for the youth policy, infact i fucking love the fact we picking up really talented players at the age they are its great for the future, but like others have said it means fuck all if we dont invest in the first team.

So was Gazza when he started for us but how many players like that come along ? Once in a generation. If he is in that class then great but especially for defenders you need to be physically strong and at 16 it's unlikely that anyone would be able to compete physically as a defender.

Yeah but Rooney was a freak, a total one off player. He was better then than most of our squad is now.......
