Ronaldo and Taylor involved in tunnel row

STEVEN Taylor was involved in a heated tunnel confrontation with Cristiano Ronaldo last night as Newcastle slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United that leaves them just one point clear of the Premier League relegation zone.

The pair followed each other into the tunnel after the half-time whistle, and witnesses claim Ronaldo accused the Newcastle full-back of being a “rubbish footballer”.

Taylor is understood to have countered by branding the reigning Footballer of the Year “ugly”, and with the confrontation threatening to boil over, Rio Ferdinand and referee Steve Bennett were forced to intervene to break up the argument.

Ronaldo and Taylor involved in tunnel row

STEVEN TAYLOR and Rio Ferdinand were involved in a vicious bust-up in the St James’s Park tunnel last night.
The two defenders clashed after Toon star Taylor grappled with Ronaldo near the end of the first half and flung the Portuguese ace to the ground after a touchline tussle.
But contrary to reports this morning, Taylor was NOT involved with any altercation with Ronaldo off the pitch.
Taylor said last night: “There was no bust-up with Ronaldo.
“I shook hands with him at the end of the game.”
Several other players were involved in the mini-brawl before officials and team-mates pulled apart Ferdinand and Taylor as the teams filed down the tunnel for the break.
Ferdinand was incensed by Taylor’s encounter with Ronaldo which left the Man U star lying dazed by the sponsor boards.
And after Taylor had been booked, Ferdinand’s protests to Steve Bennett earned him a yellow card before he headed to confront Newcastle’s Academy product in the tunnel.
Meanwhile, speaking about the incident caretaker boss Chris Hughton said: ‘I’ve had an opportunity to see the incident again and Steven catches him on the shoulder, and that’s all it was.”
