Hughton unfazed by lack of signings

CHRIS Hughton has admitted Newcastle United are unlikely to have any new faces for the start of pre-season training next week as he continues to fire blanks in the transfer market.

Hughton, though, is still relaxed about the lack of new signings this summer as he continues to point to a sluggish transfer market, restricted by the recession and the distraction of the World Cup in South Africa.

United’s manager had hoped to bring players in before the squad returns to Tyneside for training after an unusually long summer break on Saturday, but he is not concerned by his failure to do that or the fact Steven Taylor has still not signed a new contract.

Taylor only has 12 months left on his existing deal and will be able to leave for free at the end of it, but Hughton revealed there were “no updates” on the centre-back’s situation and would not even confirm whether the contract offer he was promised has been made.

With money tight at St James’ Park, Hughton is trying to do the best he can with the limited resources at his disposal, and the former Republic of Ireland international is keen to reassure supporters who are starting to worry about the state of the squad heading into a Premier League campaign.

Hughton said: “There is nothing happening at the moment, but I am not worried by that.

“Everyone is being cagey, nobody has done much business and there have only been two clubs in the Premier League who have signed anyone so far.

“It would have been nice to get two in before the start of pre-season training. That does not look like happening now, but it is quiet everywhere.

“It will pick up in the next two weeks, but it might even be a month or so before you see the market start to move again.

“What is important is we bring in the right players, not just any players.

“Just because we have not signed anyone yet does not mean we will not bring in the players we want.

“We want players in before August 14th (first day of the Premier League season), that is what is important.”

Despite the lack of money at Newcastle, the Magpies continue to be linked with a wide variety of players with attention focusing on Bolton Wanderers duo Jlloyd Samuel and Andy O’Brien last week. United have been in contact with Wanderers boss Owen Coyle, but Hughton is coy about their chances of signing Samuel and has denied O’Brien is set to move back to St James’ Park five years after leaving the club for Portsmouth following 120 games in the black and white stripes.

Hughton said: “Again, there is no update and we are not looking to sign Andy O’Brien.”

Meanwhile, Jonás Gutiérrez’s agent Pedro Jimenez Bravo has moved swiftly to end speculation linking the Argentina international (pictured left) with a move away from Newcastle following reports Serie A’s Lazio are interested in him. Gutiérrez is one of Newcastle’s most saleable assets, but Hughton is adamant nobody will be leaving this summer, and it does not look as though the winger will do anything to upset that view.

Bravo said: “Jonás is a Newcastle player, and still has three years left on his current contract. He intends to respect that contract with the Magpies.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle will send a side to play Luton Town in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, August 4 according to the Blue Square Premier side’s website – although United insist they are yet to agree terms on the fixture.

“What is important is we bring in the right players, not just any players.

The right players being one's who are free and play for next to nothing.

Hmmmmm, firstly more than 2 clubs have signed players.

Secondly Kris Boyd has basically asked us to make him an offer on more than one occasion, I havent even watched the bloke, but he clearly knows where the net is.

Thirdly Martin Petrov just went to Bolton FOR FREE - I know we had this the other day, but ignoring him is seeming stupider by the day.

That list of free transfers is dwindelling by the day, we have known our fate for 10 weeks or something.

We arent doing enough, that is clear.

Lets see, I keep thinking we must have some players lined up, but the more I read the quotes that are coming out of SJP the more I think if we stay up we'll be lucky with our slow midfield we'll be ripped to pieces certainly when we play the top 6. The crunch games for us will be when we play the bottom sides, if we get anything off the rest then that's just icing on the cake.

What a horrible prospect of a season if that is the case.

What happened to Mike Ashley? This was the same fella who sanction £6million for Jose, £10million for Colo, £5million for Jonas, £6million for Smith amongst others.

And he paid them all mental wages. Now we are linked with pissing Samuel?

The most worrying thing in that piece is the fact Taylor doesn't look interested in signing

I'm not going to be held to ransom by anybody, least of all of all Taylor as he's done it before.

No, we're all quite happy fighting relelgation next season. What a fucking bastard of a reason. If that is his thinking he can fuck right off now.

We conceded less goals without him in the team than we did with I'm sure.

He's a professional, local boy or not. If you have worked your ars off last season (admittedly he was injured most of it) just to see your owner wants it all over again in a lower league would you be happy

That is exactly what Ashley wants to hear, it makes so much easier to sell the player and bring in a Danny Shittu or a Andy o fucking Brien

Possibly not...I just hate it when players leave because of "lack of ambition". Who the fuck does he think he is? Why don't we all just mupsticks and leave and support Man Utd because of our lack of ambiton?

Every player should be asking what the clubs ambitions are, every fucking one of them.

I would question their motivation, if they're happy to remain at the club with a owner with zero ambition.

The players that are happy, imo, will be the ones that are shit and would not get a better wage or club.

BTW mupsticks

RE: Hughton unfazed by lack of signings

Taylor is in the last year of his contract.

The club appear the be a 'rudderless ship' (to quote our former chairman), after Englands disgracefull showing in South Africa he should quite rightly see this next couple of seasons as a big opportunity to at least have a chance at getting in the squad.

All of the above points to not signing a new deal and either playing out the last year to see how things pan out with us, or accepting the club wont allow him to leave for free so move on to a club which will further his career.

Its not necessarily about money, its all common sense.

Wigan now splashing £6mil on a long term target.

Wolves, Wigan, Birmingham, West Brom all signed at least something already.

How depressing.

On that basis you must believe we are going to bring in 2 players that will be better / less likely to be banged up?

Carroll wont go to jail, Taylor is not a world beater but he is part of our first 11 and thats that.

They both need to be offered new contracts then we can move on to addressing the other holes in our squad.

Heard that Taylor was given the contract just over a week ago, just because there are "no updates" doesn't mean it isn't being worked out behind the scenes

Also they said Hughton wouldn't confirm if it had been offered, but there were no direct quotes regarding this... if he wasn't asked the question so couldn't answer it (meaning no quotes) does that mean he didn't confirm it was offered? or the press didn't bother asking

I don't blame Taylor for not signing a new deal id be waiting to hear if someone was in for me if i were him. Whats the point staying at a no hope club that has no fucking ambition. We need to take the black & white glasses off, we are not the same club that should have won the title under KK all those years ago. We are a poor team with a rich owner who wont put anymore of his money into the club.
