We’ve steadied the ship, says Chris Hughton

Chris Hughton is confident that Newcastle United have finally regained the stability which the club so desperately lacked in recent years.

It’s two years to the day since Kevin Keegan walked away from his post at St James’ Park and Hughton was left in temporary charge as the Magpies tumbled into disarray.

During the season which ended in United’s relegation, no fewer than FOUR different managers were at the helm, including the ex-Eire player, and it was Hughton who picked United up after their Premier survival bid failed.

Now Hughton says he is delighted to have been backed by his board with five new faces arriving at St James’ Park this summer.

Skipper Kevin Nolan has already spoken of a plan which involves survival first, then a push for Europe.

And Hughton feels that United can replicate the progress made during Sir Bobby Robson’s reign, given time and continued stability.

Back then, young stars such as Craig Bellamy, Jermaine Jenas, Kieron Dyer and Aaron Hughes all gelled with experienced aces such as Alan Shearer, Nobby Solano and Gary Speed.

Similar progress now would mark a sensational recovery after relegation, but Hughton told the Chronicle today: “Stability was always going to be vital and now we feel we have that.

“When you look at the players we have signed, they all have their best years in front of them.

“You have Dan Gosling at 20, Cheik Tiote at 24, James Perch at 24 and Hatem Ben Arfa at 23.

“Sol Campbell is out of that category, of course, but he has been brought in for different reasons, and these young players can benefit from his experience in games and on the training ground.

“But overall we are looking to the future with this group.”

United also boast a further cluster of promising players under the age of 25 such as Andy Carroll, Danny Guthrie, Danny Simpson, Haris Vuckic and Tim Krul, and Hughton is excited by the rebuilding programme that lies ahead.

He added: “We have other young players too and they all have a big part to play in the future of the club.”

Hughton remained tight-lipped on any talk future signings but did say: “In January we will re-assess what we have, and I think I’ll get the backing of the owner again like last time if we need to strengthen the team at that stage.”

there were some saying when he got his new contract that if he stayed in the prem we would be bottom at xmas and ashley would sack him, i was one of them actually, ....Dodgy but the performances in the first three games have been ok and his summer signngs appear sensible and he is clearly getting the hang of this manager lark and the thought of being bottom of the league by xmas is ludicrous now,...isn`t it ..??!!

It is only 3 games..

plenty of time for AC to knock the living day lights out of Nolan and the whole pack of cards will be grounded
