This is what I wanted pardew to say...

Alan Pardew hopes Newcastle's spirited display against Chelsea on Sunday will help persuade owner Mike Ashley to make additions in the summer.

The Magpies twice came from behind at Stamford Bridge to claim a 2-2 draw and ensure they head into the final game of the season against West Brom next weekend with a chance of finishing in the top half of the Premier League table.

And manager Pardew hopes the encouraging performance will tempt Ashley to invest heavily in the squad over the summer break as Newcastle look to push on next season.

"I don't think a performance like that does any harm for the owner," Pardew told The Northern Echo.

"It will give him belief that we are doing the right things and putting the right things in place to take the club forward.

"If I was the owner I'd be a little bit more secure in investing."

"It will give him belief that we are doing the right things and putting the right things in place to take the club forward."

He added: "We want to attract one or two big players and bring through one or two of our own. That's the balance you need if you want to be successful.

"The next stage for us is to bring the players in to take us on. You've got to give the fans hope and belief, and they will have been buoyed by what they have seen with the young players. But they will also be hoping to see one or two big players come in."

Newcastle, promoted from the Championship last season, have earned plaudits for their team spirit this term after adapting well to life back in the top-flight.

But Pardew believes there is more to his squad than strength of character, adding: "I think we have a little bit more than just spirit.

"We've got quality. You can't get a result at Chelsea without very, very good players."
