McKay - I have had a few calls from other clubs because of the news

Joey Barton's agent claims he has already been contacted by managers interested in signing the Newcastle United midfielder.

Willie McKay headed to Tyneside on Wednesday morning to re-open contract talks for the 28-year-old, but after a brief meeting with managing director Derek Llambias and club secretary Lee Charnley, left with no deal even on the table.

The news, which means next season will be Barton's last on Tyneside unless there is a radical shift in the club's current stance, has come as a major shock to fans.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Magpies will now attempt to cash in on their £5.8 million ($8.95 million) signing this northern summer, or allow him to leave for free in a year's time when his existing deal expires.

McKay told BBC Radio Newcastle: "I have had a few calls from other clubs because of the news - everybody knows about the situation at the moment.

"I have had a few managers on asking what the situation is with Joey, but only if a top club [came in], I think he would move on.

"He has set his mind up to stay at Newcastle next season because he loves it up there, he's settled and he's playing very, very well.

"Hopefully he can break into the England team at some stage."

Asked if there was any possibility of a resolution of the deadlock, McKay replied: "The only reason Joey will stay at Newcastle [beyond next season], I think, is if there are new owners, to be perfectly honest.

"Obviously, they [Newcastle] are in a situation where they will be looking for somebody to come in for Joey and offer him a contract, but at the end of the day, it might not be the right club.

"Joey is quite strong-minded and I think he will stay at Newcastle for next season.

"At the end of the day, Joey likes it at Newcastle and he will probably just run his contract out.

"Obviously, we need to look for something for Joey in January, and that's where we are."

McKay confirmed that Barton was looking for a four-year deal, but was prepared to take a pay-cut, although the two parties were unable to reach agreement on that basis in January.

He said: "He wanted a four-year contract which would see him right through his best years.

"He was happy to take a four-year deal and less money."

Barton, of course, has endured a chequered spell at St James' Park which at one point saw him jailed.

However, he has made the most of the chance his employer gave him on his release and was one of the club's key players last season.

McKay said: "I must say that, to be fair to Newcastle and the current Board, they stuck by Joey. I think he repaid them last season - I think he had a great season.

"But they stuck by him, there's no doubt about that, Derek Llambias especially."

Outspoken at times, the former Manchester City midfielder has repeatedly expressed his affection for the club, and he has indicated on more than one occasion that he would be happy to extend his stay.

However, that has always been accompanied by the caveat that the club must match his ambition, with skipper Kevin Nolan and fullback Jose Enrique yet to commit themselves to new contracts and the Spaniard seemingly unlikely to do so.

I'd be happy if he goes at the end of the contract.

If he goes before the new season we must get a replacement.

NO HE HASN'T not by a long chalk. He had 2 seasons of injuries and prison. If the club had not stuck by him no other club would have touched him and he would have vanished into obscurity.

He owes the club his career, not just one good season

Yep, he wants to repay them by signing for 4 years on a reduced salary.

RE: McKay - I have had a few calls from other clubs because of the news

It's a funny old situation this, is it not.

Reading between the lines from Barton's statements at talk-ins as reported on here it appeared obvious things were not going too well on the contract front.

When I first heard I was very disappointed, but equally when I found out MacKay was involved I was a bit angry. That man has bled our club for years.

But above all I was a bit angry that MacKay went straight for the populist route, or shall I say "he played the Carroll card", by stating that if the owner left then Barton would consider re-signing.

Call me old-fashioned but in my book that is classic spin and what is known in magician circles as a diversionary routine (I've made this bit up to look like I know about magicians and shit, but you get my drift).

It brings in a whole different dimension to the story and MacKay knows this. It immediately brings Barton on-side with dissaffected supporters - which is fair enough I suppose. But in reality what it is really saying is that the current owners would not match or better his £70k per week wages (or whatever it is). Would new owners, by the way? How does he know?

Now call me old-fashioned again - but as we all know Barton has had a very cushy ride from NUFC, especially under "Nasty" Ashley. When a lot of people were calling for his head when he was jailed, quite amazingly the club stood by him. I am sure he could have been off-loaded either then or during his numerous injuries.

But of course, he has now become a touch-stone for the relative success of the side this season. Alongside the likes of Nolan and Tiote he is at the fulcrum of our better performances. So shouldn't we as fans be four-square behind him against "Nasty" Ashley.

But there is the nagging doubt that Mr Barton is playing games with our emotions, and people who criticised Owen for the way he casually quit the club when we went down after years of injuries and below-par performances should perhaps stop for a minute and consider whether Barton and his demands may have been a little over the top for a player who has only really delivered for one season. And using Wraith in the manner Carroll did is a bit naff....to say the least.

I'm still not sure what side I am on over this - but hey ho, that's the way it goes supporting NUFC. Football, politics and cod-psychology goes with the territory.

ps. apologies for the mind-numbingly long-winded post but I have had a long couple of weeks and I'm quite frankly glad to be alive at the moment. Yay for me.

thank you. I thought so too. A little too even-handed and not enough shouting, but I am still sober.

I wouldnt give Barton a 4 year contract like 2+1 year deal is sufficient.

I reckon that's the problem rotti. He's demanded a 4 or 5 year deal, and they've told him no chance.

Well if thats the case m8 and as much as i hate the fat cunt i dont blame him for knocking it back 4 years is too much to offer someone on the money he will be wanting. Like i say a 2 year deal with the option of a 3rd year is the most he should expect. But he holds all the cards because he can leave for nowt in 12 months time.

I still find it a bit much that that cunt Willie MacKay is his agent.

For once, wouldn't it be nice if one of these multi-millionaires who claim they "love" NUFC, actually sign a cheap contract and say they did it cos they really wanted to stay?

Instead they spout off about "ambition" or slag off the owners. Fair enough but we all really know it is just about money. Greedy fuckers, and makes me want to pack it all in to be honest.

And that, in a nutshell, is why I tend to give Ashley a little credit, certainly compared to some. At the end of the day, its easy to love a club for £50k a week, or whatever. Even Ashleys fiercest critics have to concede that he has spent a damn siight more than he has earned. We might suspect his motives, but he at least is financially committed: for better or wworse.
