Pardew: Return of Cheick Tiote is big boost

ALAN PARDEW insists the return of Cheick Tiote is a massive boost for Newcastle – with the midfield enforcer raring to go.

Tiote has missed United’s last seven games whilst serving the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations.

That ended in penalty shoot-out heartbreak in Sunday’s final against Zambia.

With the competition set to switch from even to odd year numbers, Pardew is confident the 25-year-old will be back for a second stab in 12 months time.

But for now, the Toon boss says, he and his team-mates are focused on their club.

Tiote is now back on Tyneside but having played four games on international duty – whilst Newcastle beat Blackburn Rovers twice, QPR and Aston Villa, but lost to Brighton & Hove Albion, Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur – he has been given a few days off.

He reports back for training on Monday with Pardew assured he will be fully focused on his club, and delighted to welcome him to the fold.

“It’s about the next game now, and we’ve got Cheick coming back, and Yohan (Cabaye) available again,” Pardew said.

“That’s a boost for everybody. The players are focused on putting the last game behind them.

“We’ve given Cheick some time off. He’s had a daunting run of games but he’ll be back on Monday.

“I’ve spoken to Cheick, and he’s OK. He did a really good job out there, but unfortunately they got beaten in a penalty shoot-out.

“They came out with a lot of credit. Cheick will have another chance in the African Cup of Nations in 12 months time, and he’ll be focused on Newcastle United now.

“He’ll be ready to go again next week, after a rest. He’ll be focused on helping his team.

“We’re in a better league position than when he left. Who would have thought that we’d lose Cheick and Demba (Ba), and when they returned we’d be in a better position?

“That’s credit to the players we have here.”
