Blatter calls for an alternative to penalty shoot-outs

The Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, has labelled penalty shoot-outs "a tragedy" and challenged Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative.

Two major tournaments last season were decided by shoot-outs – Chelsea's Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich and the Africa Cup of Nations when Zambia beat Ivory Coast.

Beckenbauer, honorary president of Bayern Munich, is also head of the Football Task Force 2014 which has been charged with recommending rule changes and Blatter said the body should now look at penalty shoot-outs.

Blatter told the Fifa Congress in Budapest: "Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks. Football should not go to one to one, when it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence.

"Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution perhaps not today but in the future."

I suppose the captains could have a punch up in the centre circle.

To be honest i dont how else you can decide the outcome unless after extra time, the game is just played until a team scores?

Perhaps they could do the cross bar challenge, first team to hit it wins!

It's funny how he's only now questioning the validity of the penalty shoot-out once an English team wins one

The only other way to do it would be the golden goal rule with no time limit, but that could end up a death sentence to some players.

Perhaps play the golden goal but each side forfeits a player every 5 minutes.

Personally I think penalties are great.

Have the shoot out before kickoff, then each team knows who will win if the game ends in a draw..

Add the bra sizes of the respective team's WAGS. Luckily Beckham is past it, his missus's 2DD would have us at a disadvantage straight away.

Problem with the Golden Goal rule is there could be a dubious decision and a goal shouldn't have been awarded....we would need to implement some kind of idea that would prevent this from happening

They should do a version of World Cup like you used to play when you were a kid.............two against two defenders and a keeper for 10 minutes, then switch over....most goals is the winner.......in the unlikely event of a draw after that the loser is the first one to get called in off his mam for his tea

If it was a tournament then the accumulated goals for/difference could be a factor. The boring teams who had nudged it by doing the old 1-0 bollox would be at a disadvantage to the teams who had gone for it and played football instead of chess.

yeah but thats just down to poor reffing which could happen at any point in the 90 minutes? Its got to better that the pure lottery of pens? Im not being funny but I bet ToTT could cobble together 5 who could win a pen shoot out against Barcelona given a fair wind. Smile

Exactly what I was thinking.

I was talking to this bloke at work, a Spurs fan, and we were talking about the Champions League and Europa. He reckoned it should be open to everyone. Anyway he liked my suggestion of selecting teams for the competition by spinning the Wheel of Fortune, only the pointer would be a spread eagled Sepp Blatter, one arm on fire. The team pointed to by the fiery arm could get CL and the non-fiery arm Europa.

This process would be repeated in the national stadia of Europe. I'd certainly pay £50 for a ticket to see that cunt subjected to humiliated agony.

Sepp Blatter - 28 April 2004

Quote:"Every game should have a winner. We should have the courage to introduce a final decision in every game."

Sounds like he was banging on about it even then.

RE: Blatter calls for an alternative to penalty shoot-outs

Though exhilarating, PKs are about the crappiest way to end a Championship game ever invented. Earlier rounds, maybe, can't have players playing 140 minutes all the time; but quarter finals on there needs to be something different. Let 'em play it out. Golden goal is good, it's like the team that wins the coin flip and gets to kick-off is going to win a majority of the time. Maybe 20 minutes of OT, with a golden goal after that....Happy for Chelsea (well, mainly LMAO at spurs, but I don't want to seem petty), but PKs are anti-climatic.
