Chuffed with the result. I think it shows how crap this league really is when we play poorly and win. Boro were garbage mind, but I still don't think we played well at all. Not complaining though.

Hope Smith and Ameobi are ok for the next match.

Drinking time!

The difference is we take our chances. Other teams don't take theirs.

Whatever anyone says Shola and Harewood are scoring goals, and that is all that matters as a striker. I hope Harewood gets offered a further contract. They are just too strong for most defenders in this division.

aye....Carroll doesn't score enough and Ranger isn't quite good enough...

we'll struggle if we get rid of Harewood without replacing him

I think we were so one dimensional with those 2 up top it was painful to watch at times.

They are like a clone of each other, cant tell who is who from the stands.

I would play one or the other with Ranger or Lovenkrands.

Ranger at least thinks about what he is trying to do and plays with his heed up, his run down the right handside and cut back to Nolan at toward the end of the game was quality.

We could have a real gem on our hands if he is treat right

I don't see much in Ranger to get too excited about....he's lively and energetic but even though he's young I don't think he's quality

For me, him and Carroll are far from the future of Newcastle United

Top post Mac totally true a half decent striker would have had a boat load for us by now. I cant argue with Ameobi's tally of 6 in 6 games but thats because the kid has been injured for the rest of the time.

We do not have an out and out striker like we had with Shearer/Owen/Viduka. If Viduka was fit and still here he would be already in double figures by now.

A little harsh on the lad I think.

He has a bit of pace, and good control. Full of energy and wants to prove a point.

The fact that he has scored a bagfull in the reserves (so we keep hearing) means he is capable of getting goals too.

He is showing far more promise than Carroll did at 18.

the reserves are a million miles away from the Championship mate...as is the Championship a million miles away from the Premier League

Shola is scoring a goal a game in this league and Carroll and Ranger are nowhere near....I reckon that just about sums it up

I ain't doubting the step up to each level is clearly huge, I just think that you can see already that the lad has some intellegence on the pitch, and is far more capable of linking up with the midfield than the rest of our forwards.

18 years old and in his first season in a first team, gets the thumbs up so far from me.

Ranger has only started a handful of games - he does look far better than Carrol did at 18 and I think he will be a very good player for us.

No doubt about it, i watched ranger everytime he's played and everytime he has changed the pace of the game, for an 18 year old thats pretty special.

I felt we missed carroll at times today, especially when the high balls were coming in.

Saying that not taking nothing from the 2 lads today, they put there chances away and thats what they are there to do.

Good result poor performance.

That is how to win a league.

I reckon Ranger has pace and has changed games indirectly rather than directly

Carrol has height and a bit of power which is helping him win balls against poor opposition

neither of them have what it takes to make it in the big league, which by the look of things is where we are going to be next Autumn

You never know pal, both still young and if they keep on going like they have been then they definately deserve their chances.

The thing is what is Ranger supposed to do in the last 15 minutes of a game whilst we're 2 - 0 and just sitting back, he can'tsingle handedlydo everything by himself. I'll stand back from saying he's going to a good/great player for us, bu i'd like to see him starting a few games on the trot, but unfortuantely for him , the current pairing are doing a good job so far

Good post GL. Sums up my thoughts about Ranger.

As for Carroll I'd much rather see him and Shola than Harewood and Shola. He offers a lot more than Harewood.

One reason Carroll doesn't get as many goals as the likes of Nolan, Shola and Harewood is that they are feeding off Carroll's flick ons and hold up play. He is the main point of attack when he's on the pitch. He creates the chances for others. Both goals at Barnsley came through him.
