Match abandoned as replacement Ref had drunk too much

A football cup tie was abandoned after the losing side refused a replacement referee in the 83rd minute.

Altrincham FC plucked a substitute official from the crowd after the first ref picked up a calf strain during the FA Trophy clash with Colwyn Bay.

But the Welsh side, who were 2-0 down, claimed the replacement, a grade 5 qualified ref, had been drinking and refused to play the final seven minutes on the clock.

Altrincham 's assistant coach Ian Senior offered to run the line for the remainder, but that too was refused by Colwyn Bay over concerns of impartiality.

The Football Association will now rule on whether the Conference North sides must replay the tie on Tuesday.

The bizarre turn of events was played out on the Trafford side's Twitter feed on Saturday afternoon and was confirmed by chairman Grahame Rowley.

Colwyn Bay boss Frank Sinclair could not be contacted for a comment but earlier told BBC Five Live that the club were 'within their rights' not to finish the game, as no impartial, qualified official was available.

Sinclair later posted on Twitter: '@altrinchamfc Absolutely love the abuse I'm getting off your highly intelligent fans, tear drops into my Indian takeaway tonight.'
