Gouffran happy to play anywhere

NEWCASTLE utility man Yoan Gouffran has pledged to continue sacrificing personal glory for the good of the team.

The Frenchman has been an unsung hero in the Magpies’ upturn in fortunes since their derby defeat to Sunderland.

The pacy forward has regularly curbed his attacking instincts to help out the defence in wide positions, particularly in the backs-to-the-wall games against Liverpool and Tottenham.

His diligence and hard work may not make the headlines, but it has not gone unnoticed among fans and team-mates alike.

And while he still sees himself as a centre-forward rather than a wide player, Gouffran is happy to fill any role that manager Alan Pardew asks of him.

“I’m the type of player that wants to do a job for the team,” said Gouffran. “That is the most important for me.

“I can play in different positions in attack or if needed I can play as a number nine.

“It’s up to the manager to decide. I will play in whatever role he asks me.”

Gouffran’s form and attitude has seen him become a fixture in Alan Pardew’s starting line-up this last month, and he has justified his position with a goal against Chelsea and assist for Loic Remy’s winner at Spurs.

However, he will not take his place for granted.

“We have a lot of quality options here,” Gouffran added. “We have Loic Remy as well as Shola Ameobi and Papiss Cisse in the squad.I don’t mind who I play with. We have a lot of competition for places and that’s the most important thing. We must just keep working hard.”
