Newcastle in danger of doing TOO well as good run of form threatens push for Europa League spot.

And owner Mike Ashley wouldn't be particularly keen on that (it doesn't make money) as Geordies win third game in a row

In the strange world of Newcastle United, Alan Pardew’s men are on the verge of doing rather too well this season.

Three wins in a row, a red-hot striker in Loic Remy and a team with a solid formula has shot the Geordies to within a couple of points of the Europa League qualification places.

Would owner Mike Ashley welcome that? No, of course not. It doesn’t make any money, it tires the players out and disrupts the next season.

Champions League, yes, as it brings in a flood of extra cash. But not the second tier competition, so steady on United.

That logic is one of the more depressing narratives of modern football, where adventure is secondary to securing top-flight status and cash.

It is too early in the season to talk of such lofty finishes, although at least one player earmarked top six or seven as the aim. Quite rightly, too. What’s the point of playing and supporting a club unless there is a dream?

Pardew has Newcastle in good nick, and key men appear highly motivated including Yohan Cabaye and striker Shola Ameobi. Not to mention on-loan Remy, who has eight goals in eight games and will be heading to one of the elite clubs in the summer if he keeps that strike rate up.

Director of Football Joe Kinnear revealed players and staff are in for a shared bonus pot if they finish top-10 this season – higher than the 12th place target they failed to meet last season.

That’s fine, but why not try and mix it higher up the league.

So what is the aim? French defender Mapou Yanga Mbiwa said: “We want to play well, we want to win every game, and see where that takes us. Champions League or Europa League is still possible at this stage.

“We’re doing everything we can to finish as high as we can. We have had a taste of European football and we would love to have it back next season.”

Good. A dreamer, with a bit of ambition. Newcastle United don’t have enough of them.

Remy’s headed opener was United’s first goal from a corner for 25 months dating back to Demba Ba’s header in October 2011. Yoan Gouffran got a reward for his hard work, with a tap in after John Ruddy failed to hold superb Shola Ameobi’s header.

Leroy Fer set up a nervous last 10 minutes with a header. Norwich boss Chris Hughton said: “We left ourselves too much to do.”
