RE: Reported take over at Villa

We are still perceived as a provincial northern outpost on the edge of the Arctic tundra to money men, we need a regular Stagecoach or something to enable travel between us and the great cities of Stourbridge, Hitchin and Carshalton. Those magic torches that them there city folks use to light their rooms would help attract interest as well.

But is that solely because of Ashley?

Reported take over at Villa

I'll say it again......Ashley is making a fortune off the back of NUFC......why would he want to sell?

Pardew publicly shoulders all the blame, the nasty men in the ground sing a hurtful song once in a blue moon and Sports Directs tills are at bursting point

He's as happy as any business man could be with this little investment

I don't think so. The perceived wisdom when he took over, and previous dealings suggested some truth in the matter, is that Ashley wanted a quick turn over. Cut the costs, make sure we stayed up and then move it on. There was never any notion that he wanted to even take digs up here to oversee the business, and apart from the initial drinks buying PR, nothing suggested he desired to be here more than a year.
The business with the Arabs is still conjecture, with people believing what they want depending on their view of ashley, and as far as i'm aware, there isn't any certifiable evidence (although i'm happy to stand corrected) that he did fuck them off and go for a drink instead. Any other attempt to sell seems to have been half hearted, and I think he's been genuinely staggered that nobody has arrived to snap his hand off for a deal, that wasn't part of the plan.
I think there is till a huge bias and misconception about the club and the region amongst the real money men, I have no idea why, because if ever there was an enterprise where you could virtually print your own money, this is it.

It's beyond annoying Rod, when you think that business people exist to make money. Here there isn't even a need for focus groups or to try and tempt a customer base, it's all here ready and waiting. Ashley is doing ok for SD as a spin off, but imagine what's to be made if he really 'went for it' and made us a top 4 or 5 regular?
If he ever finds the magic template for finishing 10th every single year, he still wont have fully exploited the potential, all he'll do is gradually drive away the punters, drive away the TV and wont be able to give the place away with free beer.

When he does eventually sell, we will end up with some one just as bad...

Sad

How much would Ashley, or anyone, have to spend to make us a regular top 4 or 5 side?

You can't put a figure on it. There are already 6 or 7 sides with that goal in mind anyway.

It's not an easy task, and it's not a case of spending a few million pounds and waiting for the money to come rolling back in.

It's a gamble. And if a gambling man like Ashley won't even risk it, who will??

First point Richy - agreed, we will get another cunt.

Secondly, the figure is of course subjective. You could give someone like Pardew 300 million to get us to top 5, whereas Hiddinck could do the same with half that. A better manager helps to achieve top 4 or 5, but unless you hit the lucky jackpot with a lesser name, then that better manager will cost.
I keep banging on about the FFP rules, but they are an undeniable fact to be dealt with. UEFA have, as Martin Samuel put it in the Mail, got their favourites and pulled the drawbridge up. It would take a major investment to make and maintain the Champs League, then hopefully your international profile will raise, thereby enabling you to cash in on the middle and far east market, but that takes time as well money. The drawback is that that investment has to be accounted for, and not just written off as a dodgy 'sponsorship' deal as the Etihad stadium deal for citeh.
The only option as I see it is that ashley bites the bullet, sells at an initial loss, with maybe an add-on from any future sale, then fuck off to buy Rangers when they get back to the SPL.

Reported take over at Villa

Everton havent spent much at all and they were right on Arsenal up until this week.

It wouldn't take a huge amount to compete with Everton and give the top clubs a scare every other season while also taking the cups seriously.

Yeah and we were up there ourselves a couple of seasons ago. I'm on about consistent levels of achievement at the top. You can get the odd good season but then the others will just catch up again.

Yeah we totally fucked up our following season, but even if we had approached it with some ambition, we would have struggled to finish 5th again.

Everton have done that 'found a decent manager' option though, and at the minute he's done well with his loan signings being particularly effective. The testing time for them is next season in Europe, and whether their chairman lets him spend some money, something he singularly refused to do with Moyes.
Next season is the main one for them.
