RE: Apathy

Craig Hope from the Mail:-

When Steve Bruce arrived at Newcastle this summer he made a vow to play attacking and entertaining football.

Six games in and the Magpies are the Premier League's least offensive side, and there is little to enjoy about their style of play.

But what is their identity? What is Bruce trying to achieve? His players don't seem to know, supporters certainly do not and you wonder if the head coach himself has a clear idea of how to get the most from a limited squad - the use of three different formations here tells its own story.

Brighton dominated - 71 per cent possession - and should have won. In Graham Potter they have a manager with a vision of how he wants his team to play.

It was telling when Newcastle skipper Jamaal Lascelles said: 'Brighton were a lot more direct last season but they have a new manager and probably work all week on passing the ball.'

What do Newcastle work on? They have made the fewest touches in the opposition box (76), fewest passes in the final third (419) and, at 33 per cent, have the lowest possession return in the division.

At one point in the first half, Brighton's Dale Stephens had completed more passes than the entire Newcastle team, who were booed off at both the interval and full-time by the lowest home crowd in nine years.

There is a stench of relegation around the club right now. Yes, you can argue Rafa Benitez's side were also involved in such scraps, but there was always a sense of progress, an identity for players to buy into, which they did.

All is not lost for Bruce, this not the impossible job. It is only September and the return of Andy Carroll and Allan Saint-Maximin - should they stay fit - will give the team a much-needed boost.

Although Bruce said: 'We've got five points (from six games). We're one below par - that's the way I see it at the moment. It's been like that for the past couple of years, so we know what's expected and we'll try and get better.'

So a point per game is par for the boss. On the early-season evidence supporters would probably take that, and just hope it proves enough to survive.

Considering we have Shelvey and Almiron in the team, he's doing well. Remind me who's idea was signing Almiron? With Longstaff, Carroll and Maxi in the starting line up we will be a much better team.

RE: Apathy

Yep but those who go to away games have a different approach they just support the team. The atmosphere was awful on Saturday. If people go they should try to get behind the team otherwise why bother going, having said this difficult to do that the way the team played this week. To be fair there has been little or no atmosphere at most games for years at SJP. It’s all rather half hearted and will only get worse this year. I prefer to go to away games anyway just aswell living where I do.

RE: Apathy

Almiron isn't the problem

It starts from the top and all supporters see is the game

Almiron is a gifted player who Benitez would have been coaching to play his role. So don't t blame the player blame the coach

Fatty must love investing in Talent that his coaches can't improve

None of our team seem to know their role, and many have lost the desire

RE: Apathy

Almiron is a big part of the problem. He could have had plenty of assists last season to ease the pressure off him, but he was too greedy for a goal. If Maximin, Carroll, Longstaff and Ritchie can get and stay fit we can drop the likes of Almiron and Shelvey. The atmosphere will be back like it was when Carroll came on. If this happens, the protesters will sharp come crawling back.

i'm beginning to wonder if KI is actually a footballer.................brings jackshit to the table, too slow, too weak, too indecisive, probably bangs out some decent tunes at the noraebang like...........but a premiership standard footballer?.....NO!

You're having a go at Ki who has proved he can do it at this level (transformed Rafas side last season) and continue to blow smoke up Almirons hoop - the bloke who looks like an excited 13 year old whose just happy to be playing with the big lads??

Have a word kidda

Ki keeps the ball well, plays it simple generally, looks to carry it forward when the chance arises, has a really good delivery from set pieces, comes across as a good professional.

He is far far more worthy of a place in the side than arguably any of the other central players right now.

i don't, ive openly agreed on here that his confidence is shot.............and did ki fuck transform the side, you're clearly mistaking him for young staffy. Rolleyes

sal the best performance this season was v spurs where thankfully Ki was not even in the squad....young hayden and longstaff are the real deal, i'm not sure which match you were watching to hold KI in such high regard, because his is absolutely none of those things you describe....he is slow, weak, too easily dispossessed and far too easily bullied out of a game...mr anonymous.

Longstaff has been shit when he has played this season.

Hayden has been poor in all but the Spurs game.

Shelvey looks a disgrace.

Aye indeed.

I am not having a pop at him as such, just saying he has been crap and shouldnt just be judged on how well he did for a handful of games last season.

Letting Diame go was a mistake.
